PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND CORRECTIONS

On my latest cruise through the eastern Provinces of Canada, I made a left turn at New Brunswick, crossed the Confederation Bridge, and made my first visit to the Canadian Province of Prince Edward Island. The 13 kilometre bridge, opened about five years ago has reduced the need for the ferry system, although ferries still do operate, and made the permanent connection between this island and the mainland of Canada.

A good place to stay in Summerside!
Prince Edward Island became part of Canada in 1873. The Province is divided into three Counties, each having their own gaol in the County seat:

King County – Georgetown
Queen County – Charlottetown
Prince County – Summerside

Each of these Counties had their own Courthouse and Gaol at one time. Today the remaining operational county jail in Summerside is part of the Provincial Corrections system on the island.

The King County Gaol in Georgetown is closed, although the courthouse remains operational. The Queen County Jail located in Charlottetown is closed, and today is a pizza restaurant. The Prince Edward Island Correctional Centre located on Sleepy Hollow Road, Charlottetown holds 120 inmates. The Prince County Courthouse and Gaol are still active in Summerside.

Recently P.E.I. got a new Corrections crest (2003).
