Memorial Project
27 May 2006
The Ontario Peace Officers’ Memorial Project is now underway. The first meeting on Friday 26 May 2006 took place.
Vince Murray, retired Correctional Officer from Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, Founder, and now Past President of the Canadian Peace Officers’ Memorial Association (CPOMA) also attended.
During the 1-hour meeting, background, ideas, and what’s next to do in the process were discussed. I had also gathered an information package with letters from most Provinces for the meeting about their Police & Peace Officers’ Memorials.
A Bill will be introduced in the Legislature that will set a Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in Ontario on the last Sunday of September, along with a Peace Officers’ Memorial, hopefully at Queen’s Park. There are currently 20 Ontario Peace Officers and 10 Federal Peace Officers who have been killed in the ‘Line of Duty’ in this Province, and there are more that still need to be researched historically, which is ongoing.
An Ontario Peace Officers’ Memorial Association will be established that will include all Peace Officer groups in the Province. The last Sunday of September is the same day across the country and in Ottawa that is recognized as Police & Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. Ontario Police hold their Memorial Service in May at their Memorial site at Queen’s Park.
When this Bill is presented in the Ontario Legislature, it is hoped there will be a large attendance by Ontario Peace Officers in the Visitors Gallery. The date and time for the Bill will be posted here, on this web site, when it is known, so stay tuned.
Ontario Peace Officers that might be interested in becoming involved in this Memorial Association can call Vince Murray at (613) 259-2604 for more information.
There is info about other Provincial Police & Peace Officers’ Memorials across Canada on this web site, and also on the CPOMA web site at:
