ONTARIO PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION NEWS

Updated June 14, 2008

The Support for Ontario Peace Officers' Memorial is growing.  Visits continue to be made to MPP's across the Province.  Information packages are being sent to all MPP's in the Province.

One project ongoing, at the moment, is a grave marker for Corrections Officer Arthur Awty of the Hamilton Jail.  It is expected the stone will be laid this summer.

Ontario Peace Officer Pins are again available for purchase. This is currently the sole source of funding for the Memorial Project. The pins are $5.00 each, and you can contact me to get them at;

I have been looking for groups of Peace Officers around Ontario.  I have found Peace Officers in a number of Ministries; Corrections, Natural Resources, Transportation, Environment, Agriculture and Foods, Youth Services, Probation and Parole, and the Legislature Protective Services so far.

The Jail Lands of Guelph

The York Road Jail Lands (the old Guelph Correctional Centre and Wellington Detention Centre Lands) is 1,000+ acres. There is one named roadway on the property now, Dunlop Drive. I will be contacting Guelph's Mayor, and Councilors and proposing that any further naming of streets in this huge block of land be taken from a list of names of Superintendents and Officers who had spent part of their lives working at these two facilities. A Museum is not going to happen on the property, I have been informed, and the Memorial Park proposal has been bogged down in policy making.

Although there is already a Guelph street naming policy, I hope these officials may see the point to an amendment to the current process.

The AuthentiCity report came out in November 2007 and is on the City of Guelph Website.  There are supposed to be more meetings in early 2008.  No dates as of yet.  More news forthcoming.
